Challenge: The iconic Victorian arches along Brighton seafront, which support the promenade and the busy A529 carriageway, were deteriorating and in urgent need of repair. The challenge was to strengthen and refurbish these arches while preserving their historic appearance.
Solution: To restore the arches, the structures were carefully demolished and rebuilt with a reinforced deck and brickwork façade. Collaborating closely with Ibstock, the new façade was constructed using precast pillar sections and segmental fair-faced arches. These arches were cast as single 3-metre wide units, each faced with Ibstock's Cattybrook Cheddar Red brick slips. Matching brickwork infill courses were used to frame each arch, and every intricate detail - including 5mm narrow joints, decorative brick plinths, and bullnose arch trims - was meticulously recreated to reflect the original Victorian design.
This approach ensured the perfect balance between structural integrity and the preservation of Brighton's architectural heritage.
