I chose to do an apprenticeship as it was something different to Sixth Form, where I can learn and get on-the-job training together. "My apprenticeship at Ibstock has been a brilliant start to my working life. However, the path to this point was not so smooth. Growing up, I found the education system challenging. It’s not designed to support students with additional needs such as my Autism and ADHD. The structure of a university course doesn’t always support autism in the way we need. Working at Ibstock has really enabled me to understand the working environment and gain some amazing experience alongside qualifications. I get to develop my skills working with mineral products and train to join management, where I can use my experiences to really make a difference for those following my path who will need support."

Tom joined Ibstock Brick in September 2014 on our Trainee Management Programme, previously known as Ibstock Brick's Apprenticeship scheme, as a mature Technical apprentice initially based at the Dorket Head factory. Tom won the company "Apprentice of the Year" award that year. Having transferred to Leicester's Eclipse Factory as part of the project team in 2016, Tom has gone on to be promoted to Technical Manager in 2017 and to Factory Manager in 2021.

"After leaving school, I was a little lost in what I should do next. I saw the Ibstock role advertised I thought I’d give it a go. Since joining Ibstock, I have achieved an honours degree, won apprentice of the year and have now been working in the business for almost 10 years. It’s such an exciting and diverse company, giving me invaluable experience across multiple divisions and disciplines that I hope will stand me in a great position for the future.
