We're thrilled to have had the opportunity to collaborate with local residents in Whitby on a special project as part of the Invisible Dust Wild Eye programme.
Our team worked diligently on a captivating sculptural bench, designed to shed light on a pressing environmental issue related to water quality in the Esk estuary. The data collected by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust revealed that while the upstream section boasts excellent water quality and is home to rare species like the freshwater pearl mussel, the harbour area is facing pollution challenges.
Together with the community, ideas were brainstormed for a unique piece of public art that could help raise awareness about this critical matter. Combining everyone's creativity, a proposal was crafted for a series of stunning sculptural benches portraying the wildlife above and below the water at different points along the Esk.
It was fascinating to see local residents taking part in workshops where they contributed their artistic talents, creating beautiful illustrations inspired by species suggested by the Whitby Naturalists Society.
These remarkable benches are made from custom-sized Cheddar Golden bricks, generously provided by our Cattybrook Factory and skilfully coloured with underglaze.
We're incredibly proud of this collaborative effort, which wouldn't have been possible without the valuable partnership between Invisible Dust, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, and Scarborough District Council.
This project represents the power of art and community coming together to address environmental challenges and make a positive impact. We hope these benches will not only serve as beautiful landmarks but also as reminders of the importance of safeguarding our precious ecosystems. Let's continue working hand in hand for a greener, healthier future!
