This prestigious event took place at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London on November 6, and proved a night to remember with projects featuring Ibstock bricks triumphing in eleven categories, including: Contractors Choice, Architects Choice, Small Housing Development, Housebuilder, Commercial, Public, Education, Craftsmanship, Urban Regeneration, Specialist Brickwork Contractor and the Supreme Award, which is selected from the winning entries from all Brick Awards categories and crowns the project of the year.

This is a tremendously competitive sector and the quality of entries from every manufacturer was very high indeed. The Supreme Award for the Norton Folgate development, which won two awards, is a particular highlight, as it is the highest possible accolade bestowed in the brick industry.

Contractors Choice category winner
The winning project was phase two of the
Royal Eden Docks in London designed by architects Hunters. Ibstock bricks specified for this project were White Engobe, Ivanhoe Creams and Moss Green GR49.
Architects Choice category winner
Architect Corstorphine & Wright chose Ibstock’s London White Glazed Brick and Special Shapes for
the Scoop Building in London.
Small Housing Development category winner
The winning project was
Manresa House in Birmingham. Designed by OMI Architects, the bricks featured in the building were Ibstock/Wienerberger’s Birtley Old English/Pagus Grey.
Housebuilder category winner
Ibstock bricks were specified on two winning developments in this category. The first is Shopwyke Lakes in Chichester, which was designed by
Cala Homes. Several different Ibstock bricks were used on this scheme comprising: Berkshire Orange Stock, Thakeham Red Multi Stock, Capital Browns Stock, Multi Orange Stock and Minster Cream Blend.
Cala Homes also specified Ibstock bricks for its Waterbeach Development in Cambridgeshire, which featured the attractive New Ivanhoe Cream and Ivanhoe Cream Original products.
Commercial category winner
First prize was awarded to the
Berners & Wells Street project in London. Designed by Emrys Architects, Ibstock’s Blue Glazed were among the bricks used on the project.
Public category winner
Richard Murphy Architects selected Ibstock’s Slater Blue Smooth and Sky Blue Glazed bricks for the
Greenock Ocean Terminal in London.
Education category winner
Craftsmanship category winner
Architects Stanton Williams/Sonnemann Toon designed the
5 Fredericks Place in London. Among the bricks specified for the building were Ibstock’s Kingston Handmade Restoration Red and Kingston Handmade Heather Red.
Specialist Brickwork Contractor category winner
Cara Brickwork came out on top in this category, in recognition of its work on the Monk Bridge development in Leeds, designed by Carey Jones Chapman Tolcher. The residential scheme includes Ibstock and Wienerberger bricks, with Cara earning particular praise from the judges for its commitment to quality and investing in the future of the industry by offering apprenticeship schemes to young builders.
Supreme Award and Urban Regeneration category winner
The triumphant project in this category was the
Norton Folgate development in London’s City Fringe. Designed by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, Stanton Williams, and Morris + Company, the scheme featuring Ibstock bricks. Judges praised the project as a “a highly accomplished and sensitive marriage of historic retention, restoration and rebuilding, with new sympathetic commercial architecture in brick.”
Ian Caddick concluded: “The BDA Brick Awards is always a great night for the brick industry, bringing the sector together to celebrate the wonderful achievements that is collectively achieves.
