During the first International Day of Ceramics Ibstock are highlighting the work of award-winning ceramic artist, designer and architect, Maria Gasparian. Maria's innovative approach demonstrates the creative potential of clay in both art and architecture.
Based in London, Maria originally trained as an architect and later completed an MA and a PhD in ceramics at the University of the Arts London. Her work explores the plasticity of clay, using dynamic forms, texture and colour to create pieces that have an immediate sensory impact.
Maria has received numerous accolades, including the Unilever Sustain-Ability Award and the Mullen Lowe Nova Award for Innovation in 2016, and she was awarded the Winston Churchill Fellowship to research global applications of architectural ceramics. In 2016 she founded Maria Gasparian Studio Ltd, a multidisciplinary practice combining art, architecture and design to create tactile ceramic surfaces, sculptural elements and public installations.
Maria’s work has also been recognised at the Brick Development Association’s Brick Awards, and she contributed to the design of the 2025 Brick Award trophy.
Recently, Maria visited our Nostell Horizon Ceramic Façade Manufacturing Facility, where we were pleased to showcase our latest investment in ceramic façade manufacturing. During her visit we discussed how the IBrick®, our purpose-made thin brick, is opening up new possibilities for architects seeking greater freedom in colour and texture.
International Day of Ceramics celebrates the importance of ceramic materials across art, architecture and technology. Maria’s work is a powerful reminder that clay remains one of the most versatile and inspiring materials available to designers today.
