Increasingly, sustainability is also part of that conversation. That’s why tools like Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are used to assess sustainability information across the life cycle of a product.

A product group EPD provides a greater degree of accuracy than a factory EPD. A product group is a common recipe covering a number of different bricks from an Ibstock factory. Within the product group there may be minor textural or surface differences but these have no effect on the overall environmental impact. So, the EPD is the same for all the bricks in a single product group.

What is an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)?
An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is:
- A report of the environmental impacts of a product throughout its whole lifecycle, from cradle to grave.
- Developed in accordance with the ISO 14025 standard and based on a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA).
- Typically based on 1 year of production data and valid for 5 years.
- Verified by an independent third party.
- Based on a specified unit of measure e.g. per tonne or per kg - check this before you use the numbers in your calculations.
- Based on a specified service life of the product e.g. 150 years for a brick.
- A technical document - if you need help to interpret it just ask us.
