Organised by the Brick Development Association (BDA), the Brick Awards shine a spotlight on some of the most innovative & dynamic uses of brick in contemporary architecture. The 2025 awards took place at the Royal Lancaster Hotel, London on Wednesday, 5th November 2025.

Bulrush Court, Leaside Lock is the second phase of a major residential redevelopment by The Guinness Partnership in Bromley by Bow, London. Designed by Pitman Tozer Architects, the scheme delivers 144 high quality affordable homes in a mid-rise mansion block.

Ibstock’s Heritage County Blend was the perfect choice for the façade, thanks to its classic, timeless aesthetic, with a contemporary edge. Its rich, red hue, combined with subtle colour variations, creates a façade that is both warm and inviting, contributing to the school’s vision of creating a genuine ‘home from home’.

Using Ibstock’s Arden Weathered Red and Cissbury Red Multi Stock allowed for the perfect nod to Birmingham’s distinctive terracotta architecture. The combination of the warm red and rich brown hues of the bricks was the perfect arrangement for ensuring the site befits the traditional traits and materials visible throughout the Jewellery Quarter.

These handmade bricks - produced at Ibstock’s Swanage facility using locally sourced clay - are celebrated for their authenticity and character. Each brick is individually hand thrown into sanded moulds, creating subtle variations in tone and finish that lend the façade a rich, organic texture. It’s this artisanal process, combined with a colour that echoes the classic red hues stipulated by planning, that sets the development apart. The result is a building with soul - its façade warm, tactile and responsive to the changing London light.

Findlater’s Corner / The London Bridge Island is one of the most remarkable groups of railway arches in London. The polychrome brickwork (there are six different types of brick used on this project) takes inspiration from Borough, Bermondsey and London Bridge Station’s fabulous Victorian brick architecture.

The proposal for a new whole school library was developed closely with STAC in Nunhead, South London. The space focused on the demands of the school’s 6th Form, who had no dedicated space for personal study.

This scheme reimagines and significantly enlarges a dull 1960’s office building on Norton Folgate (Drawing 1), with handsome new facades now reclad in Ibstock Otterburn Antique brickwork. The cut and carve approach retains 88% of the existing structure (along with its embodied carbon).

The Glassworks is the latest addition to the Greenford Quay masterplan, providing 354 build-to-rent homes as part of an 8.23-hectare regeneration of a former industrial site along the Grand Union Canal in Ealing. Technical innovation in brickwork is expressed through the variation of projection and bonding patterns, enhancing visual depth and shadow play.
Highgate Newtown

The redevelopment of Highgate Newtown Community Centre, within the Dartmouth Park Conservation Area of Camden, is transformative for many people. The palette is anchored by Ibstock’s Birtley Olde English—a warm, textured red brick that echoes the character of nearby terraces and mansion blocks, rooting the scheme in its context while adding richness and depth.

Wellington College is a world leading co-educational independent day and boarding school. Brick detailing plays an important role in the design, by using bays to create pleasing proportions and groupings of brick used in long horizontal planes, or being turned vertically as stack bond elements.

These frogged facing bricks not only offer strong aesthetic appeal but also superior durability, making them an ideal choice for a high-profile, long-lasting build.

The design has been built on this historic simplicity, with verticality and a dynamic roofscape being a key anchor to this history. Four different but complimentary colours of bricks provide character and allow the expression of a series of terraced forms that respond to their individual context; dark bricks to express the marker buildings and the outward, facing elevations; light bricks for the water facing elevations; mid-tone bricks for the streets and to provide transition between light and dark; grey bricks for the three floor terrace blocks on the streets.
